Broken Spring Repair

Serving Colorado's Front Range

Garage door won’t open or close?

We’ve been there, and we know how frustrating it can be. While your instinct might be to first check your door opener, it’s actually your garage door springs that do the true heavy lifting. As it turns out, one of the most common reasons for a malfunctioning garage door is a broken spring.

These small parts have a big job — garage door springs offset the weight of a garage door and allow the door to be opened and closed easily. The high-tension steel in the springs has a limited lifespan, and over time, the springs will gradually lose effectiveness and need to be replaced.

Replacing a broken garage door spring can be very dangerous (loss of limbs, or worse) if you don’t have the proper tools and know exactly what you’re doing — that’s why PNG recommends working with a local professional that has experience in spring repair, replacement, and installation.

If you think you have a broken garage door spring needing repair, call our team at 720-982-7622, and we will have a trained technician out the same day (in most cases) to get your door open and working smoothly again.

A broken garage door spring will often have a visible gap between a stretch of coils as shown above.

What are the different types of garage door springs?

Extension Springs — Long, skinny springs that run parallel to the door’s horizontal tracks. Extension springs store energy by extending or stretching when the door is moved. There are three types of extension garage door springs:

  • Open-looped extension springs are the weakest style of extension spring and rely on an open wire at the end. If this wire is broken, the entire spring needs to be replaced, even if this is the only part of the mechanism that is faulty.
  • Double-looped extension springs are stronger than open-looped springs. They feature two coils at the end of the spring that connect to the pulley and eyebolt.
  • Clipped-end extension springs are the most robust of the three. They tend to last longer and are frequently used on garage doors that weigh 200 pounds or more.

Torsion Springs — A garage door can have anywhere from one to four torsion springs, depending on its size, weight, and strength. These springs are broad and can be found on a metal shaft directly above the door opening. Aluminum drums are placed on either end of the metal shaft, and the springs are wound to a specific torsion setting in relation to the assembly. There are four different types of torsion grarage door springs:

  • Standard torsion springs are frequently found on residential garage doors, with lighter doors only requiring one spring for effective operation.
  • Early-set torsion springs are similar to standard torsion springs, except that they are mounted in the middle of the torsion shaft.
  • Steel rolling-door torsion springs are normally seen in commercial and industrial buildings. These springs are contained within the torsion barrel.
  • Torque-master torsion springs are enclosed in the torsion shaft and are held in place by a winding cone that sits at the end of each torsion rods.

How much does a garage door spring replacement cost in Denver?

Replacing a garage door spring in the Denver Metro area will cost, on average, at least a couple hundred of dollars. But as with most garage door services, the final price will always depend on several factors – these include the size and weight of your garage door, the type of springs being used, and the location of the garage.

How do I know if I need new garage door springs?

If you’re at home when your garage door spring breaks, you’ll hear something akin to a gun-shot that will probably make you jump out of your socks. This happens when the garage door spring is stretched to capacity, causing it to snap.

Ideally, you’ll be able to catch a decaying spring before this big bang. Keep an eye out for these warning signs so you know when it’s time to get those garage door springs replaced:

  • Squeaking When metal parts rub together or are out of alignment, they tend to squeak. In the case of a garage door spring, a high-pitched squeaking indicates that the spring may need some lubrication and cleaning.
  • Garage Door Malfunctions — As we said before, many common garage door issues can be traced back to a broken or decaying spring. Call your licensed garage technician if any of these situations apply to your door:
    • The motor runs, but the door won’t open
    • The door hangs crooked
    • The door won’t stay open
    • The cables are loose
    • There are loud noises when operating
    • The door closes very slowly.
  • Wear and Tear — Nothing lasts forever; not even garage door springs. If your spring hasn’t been repaired in over a decade, it may be time to have your technician do a thorough inspection during a tune-up. When it’s time for a replacement, ask about springs that have a higher cycle rate than others to prolong the lifespan of your garage door.
  • Rust and Corrosion – Springs that come into contact with any moisture will rust quickly. Since springs are under constant high pressure, any weakening will accelerate wear and tear. Keep your springs protected from moisture by lubricating them yearly with a silicone-based lubricant. You can also use WD-40 White Lithium Grease, which won’t harm the coils like regular WD-40.

Can I repair a broken garage door spring by myself?

Garage doors may look like they’re easy to repair since they’re simple to operate, but that’s not the case.

Because the springs remain under constant, intense pressure, trying to repair them on your own can be a dangerous undertaking. Not only could you worsen the damage and end up with an even costlier repair job, but you could risk serious injury to yourself, as well as damage to any vehicles or equipment in the garage. Garage door spring replacement should be left to a trained professional.

Once the technician has removed and replaced the broken springs, the next step is to make sure the door is balanced correctly. If you’re unfamiliar with this process or don’t carry the required tools, you could damage your door and end up needing a full replacement. And as one final reason to use a pro, some warranties will not cover repairs or new parts if the work is done by someone other than a licensed professional.
